  • Cholesterol is an important substance that helps the body function. However, too much cholesterol can lead to arterial blockages that can result in heart disease and stroke. Sometimes a high level of cholesterol can display itself in a person's eyes.

    Features

Most people with high cholesterol are unaware of the problem without a blood test as there are no outward signs or symptoms. Most often, a heart attack or a stroke is the only signal that there is a problem.

    Significance

Sometimes people with high cholesterol will develop flat yellow bumps in or around the eyes. These bumps are actually fat deposits and signal high cholesterol.

    Identification

These bumps are known as xanthoma. The spots can also grow on the eyelids, but this condition is known as xanthelasma.

    Warning

If these spots appear, it is a sign that your cholesterol is at a dangerously high level. If you notice xanthoma, contact your doctor immediately.

    Prevention/Solution

Regular screening for cholesterol levels is recommended for adults over 20. A simple blood test is all that is needed to diagnose high cholesterol.
