Question

Help answer this question below.

Have you ever done one of those Bible Studies where you closely examine a passage line by line? Did it say what you thought it said?

I've done several studies of Paul's letters, like the John Stott study of Timothy and Titus. Paul was a lawyer and even 2000 years ago, he wrote like a lawyer. But slowing down and questioning every line helps to clarify what he is saying. Sometimes you come to a much different conclusion about his meaning than you had with a cursory reading. Have you ever done that discipline? What did you learn?

Yes, I have done this type of study and I have learned that a large portion of the Bible, particularly the Old Testament and the Book of Revelations, should not be taken literally.
Line by line careful reading is a good way to see what the book actually says. Then I turn to at least 3 different Bible Commentaries and read their opinions. Surprisingly, the Commentaries almost always agree, with only a few exceptions. I also like to use a "parallel view" Bible resource so I can see line by line the differences, if any, between the various Versions.

I've learned many things. Particularly that what is taught, ain't what was said.
