  • HDL is a type of lipid which transports cholesterol through the bloodstream to the body's cells. LDL, on the other hand, does not aid in cholesterol transportation and can cause serious health problems.

    High-Density Lipoprotein

HDL stands for high-density lipoprotein. HDL is known as "good" cholesterol because it travels through the blood to deliver cholesterol to the body's cells.

    Low-Density Lipoprotein

LDL stands for low-density lipoprotein. Unlike HDL, LDL does not aid in the transport of cholesterol. It is known as "bad" cholesterol because it combines with other substances to form plaque on the artery walls.

    Atherosclerosis

This buildup of plaque narrows the arteries and makes them more rigid, resulting in a condition called atherosclerosis. This increases the risk of blood clots, which can lead to heart attack and stroke.

    Increase HDL

You can increase the amount of HDL in your body by increasing exercise and losing weight. If you smoke, quitting will also increase your HDL amount.

    Decrease LDL

You can decrease your level of LDL by eating less saturated fat, increasing fiber intake and participating in aerobic exercise.
