<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Serving By Serving
A low-cholesterol diet is based on the number of milligrams present in any single serving of food. To maintain a low-cholesterol diet, never eat more than 20 mg of cholesterol in a single serving, and never eat more than 200 mg of cholesterol in a day.
On the Other: Watch the Fat
Doctors often note that watching your saturated fat intake is just as important as managing your overall cholesterol intake. Never ingest more than 2 grams of saturated fat per serving, and make sure that not more than 7 percent of your total caloric intake comes from saturated fats.
Bottom Line
A low-cholesterol diet requires both a cholesterol intake of less than 20 mg per serving and a saturated fat intake of less than 2 grams per serving. To stay heart healthy, remember to always avoid trans fats. The best way to maintain a low-cholesterol diet is to eat lean meats and reduced-fat sources of protein.
