The whole "must have" consumerism concept that so many ads use to push their products ... sure some items are handy or useful or make life a bit easier, and sure spending your money will always help some part of the economy, but very few things are actually an absolute must have. As a former military instructor, I have taught stone age technology in survival courses, and although I like new gadgets (like software - I'm a computer programmer and self defense instructor now) and modern luxuries, I certainly do not agree that I must have them in order to live.
