  • I don't know what State you are in, but having 'contract' workers is opening a can of worms. A BIG can! There are several requirements that must be met for a person to truely be an independent contractor and you must be very very careful in contracting with them. They must have their own business licenses, they must NOT be soley dependent on your for their income and they must have their own insurances. Too many 'employers' treat employees as independents because they do not want to pay the employer taxes and the workman comp insurances. Just be very careful!
  • First of all, the laws in the states are different and employers are not shielded from liabiility as easily as they once were by having independent contractors. Your question does not clearly say what you want to do. You can have independent contractors, contract employees, at-will employees, or contract with another company to handle certain tasks for your company. To be sure you do not set yourself up for labor and legal problems, I suggest you talk to an attorney about setting up your business organization and providing hiring/contracting advice.
  • I am in Texas. The people I plan to hire as independent contractors are friends of mine. It is a part time job for them. If they bring me customers, they get a commission of what I make of the deal with the customers. Thats all I want them to do. They can do it anytime or anywhere. Is that still considered an employee or IC? Jack
