Women in Japan, Korea, India and other countries try to lighten their skin "for beauty." Many Western women try to darken their skin through tanning "for beauty." Does everyone want to look medium beige? Or do we just want what we don't have?

I think we all tend to always think the grass is greener wherever we are not.

We want what we don't have. I hear of Asians having surgery to make their eyes wider. It is incredible the extremes people will go through to make themselves feel beautiful.

I think it's the whole "setting yourself apart" from the masses, be it tanning to set yourself apart from the masses of pasty white people, or lightening to set yourself apart from the masses of darker skin. I think it exoticizes people as physical commodities.
