Cooked ham bones are brittle and dangerous because they can shatter and become stuck in your dog's stomach and esophagus. If this happens, the sharp edge of a bone can get caught on the stomach lining or in the throat, causing a rupture. Ham bones are especially dangerous for dogs.

Ham bones are dangerous for your dog to chew on. If your pet breaks the bone and a shard goes down its throat, the piece can get stuck, causing extreme pain and inflammation. A costly trip to the veterinary hospital may be necessary as well as emergency surgery.
