  • Life has no purpose or reason. You live life as best you can, for the happiness of yourself and others. Morality arises from respect for others - valuing each person as having the same rights, modified by their actions.
  • Different atheists will answer this question differently. Atheists don't follow a unified ideology: the only thing they share is that they don't believe in God. My wife and in-laws are atheists. They live very similarly, you might say almost identically, to myself (I believe in God). None of us have any ideas about the purpose of life: they would probably say there is none, while I would say I don't know what God's purpose is and likely never will. We all believe the same thing about the development of life of earth (evolution), but as for the beginning of life they would say it was random whereas I would say it was creative. Their ethical system is based exclusively on human interaction, that is they believe in treating people right: with respect, propriety, acceptance, kindness, and love. I also believe in treating people right and our ideas of what is right are pretty much the same. I believe that treating people right is what God wants. Not much of a difference, really.
  • Your mistake is you assume everyone should live life the same way you do, try getting out into the world sometime. Everything is not about god and jesus.
  • Everyone is an atheist in one way or another. I just believe in one less god than they do.
  • In my opinion: There is no purpose of life, other than the fact it's fun while it lasts. Morals don't come from a religion, they come from what is best for everyone. Notice that every religion has very similar laws and ideas, because they make sense and are productive. How do I live my life? Quite easily, it just seems to happen
  • They believe that there is no purpose to life, or reason behind it. They live their lives in as many different ways as believers, and their morals can be based on whatever they choose. The normal atheist has moral standards just as high as those of most believers.
  • i read... i think it was either Sophie's World or Candide that told me that the only true purpose of one's life is to pass on one's genetics. I believe it was referred to as a boat or maybe the life itself was referred to as a boat, not sure, but there was a boat. anyway that is my meaning. :/ pretty depressin
  • Every five minutes there is another God or athiest question. Why don't you guys just go back and read all the other millions of questions and take the rest of the week off. These questions are the same over and over again.
  • The purpose of life is to be alive. What makes that interesting is that there are so many ways to be alive, and so many ways to be dead or partially-dead (while still technically living). Lots of humans are half-dead even as young adults: they live complacently, they accept what is given to them by others, they do little to explore the possibilities life offers, they pay no attention to developing their potential. In this sense, they are missing the purpose and value of life. They're only half alive. By contrast, someone who really understands life is working on living fully and enriching life for themselves and others -- why? Because that's what makes life wonderful! Why does one need another reason? A life well lived is its own reward, there is no need to pursue eternal life.
  • I can't speak for all atheist, but I've chosen that the purpose of my life is to change the world in a way that would help improve the lives of large populations on a permanent and lasting basis so that the lives of future peoples will be better than their parents'. I'm going to school so that I can advocate for human and civil rights. I live my life one day at a time and to my own standards and not defined as second class citizen by my own belief system. I live by respect, for ones self and for all other life. If you are respectful morality will follow in kind.
  • Why would you think that atheists believe any different than you do about the purpose in life. Morals don't come from religion. I live my life no differently than you, most likely.
  • Of course, an Atheist can believe anything as far as purpose, etc. is concerned. But one thing all Atheists have in common is a desire to spread the "faith." That is, convince others that there is no God if only by the example of their lives, but usually more overtly.
