No, don't rush into things. If you have waited 7/8 years to get out on a "date", you should leave it up to the friend you are asking. Invite them to coffee or to lunch first (something that you can do that only involves talking), then when they are comfortable, invite them to the movies. Each time you invite though, leave the decision up to your friend, whether they would like to attend or not.
