I have plans to build furniture.I'll let you know how that works out...or maybe you'll just hear me cursing at the top of my lungs ;)

It is not unusual. Building or making anything gets better with experience, and rarely will a first timer have beginner's luck. The key is to get proficiency at something, do it repititiosly, and sell the service to others. That is what division of labor is all about. Sticking with what you do best has a thrifty aspect.

Of course once the cost gets to that point, might as well just power through and finish it.
