  • I think vaccines and antibiotics, modern medicine in general, are contributing a lot. I think there are many of us who would have died in childhood if we'd been born before 1940. As such, we have survived, but we still have the underlying medical issues that would have made us susceptible to disease in earlier generations. I have five different autoimmune disorders. I asked my allergist about it a couple of weeks ago, and he confirmed what I suspected. In someone with as many autoimmune disorders as I have, there is usually a segment deletion in the DNA and the immune system is not functioning properly. If I'd been born earlier, I probably wouldn't have been able to fight off polio or whooping cough or measles and would have died in childhood. I think cars, air conditioning, televisions and other inventions have contributed, but I think the general shift away from an agrarian economy and toward an urban, office based lifestyle has contributed more than anything. When people worked like this, they didn't get fat.
