Defragmenting your computer's hard drive is a way of improving its efficiency at accessing and altering files and programs.
Causes of Fragmentation
As your computer accesses, creates and deletes files, parts of files are saved to different areas of your hard drive. Over time, it can become a more complicated and lengthy process to access the fragmented parts of a file.
Apple Computers
If you have an Apple computer with OS X or later, defragmenting is performed automatically by the system. Apple says that its computers do not usually need defragmenting, so users must get third-party defragmenting software.
Windows Computers
Windows 95 and later operating systems include a Disk Defragmenter tool.
Process of Defragmentation
During the defragmentation process, your computer moves the parts of the fragmented files together.
Warning
Defragmenting your hard drive can take several hours. The process may slow down your computer's operation. Consider running a defragmentation during a period in which you will be away from your computer.
