An amateur photographer is just like a professional one, UNTIL s/he sells his/her FIRST photo. From that point onward, s/he is a professional. A "shutterbug" is someone who just shoots photos for the fun of it (or for "memory enhancement"), and has no desire to profit from their hobby. +5

I agree with Mensan.. and would also like to add generally speaking the time, effort and desire to learn. Amateur photographers spend time to set up a shot, figure out the proper angle, proper way to edit the photos to fix the brightness, colours, contrast, etc. Most shutterbugs don't really care about the art of the photograph or the composition... they just look and snap.
