Because we care about you and don't want to see you thrown into the lake of fire. If we didnt care, we would leave you alone and burn for eternity.

Weird? The completely opposite question was just asked on here a few minutes ago. Any-who, I'll tell ya the same thing I said in the other post. I don't think it's a case of religious people respecting the rights of atheists to believe in whatever. It is a case of people in general, not respecting the rights of others to believe in whatever it is that they believe in.

I have to object to this one the same way I do for the questions that generalize about Atheists. Many, many religious people respect the right to disbelief. I know many of them. Those that do not are quite outspoken. They seem to think that they have a "good reason" for the harassment, because they are trying to save you from something that they can't even demonstrate exists. The bottom line is that they believe that they have to ignore your rights and will in order to force their superior beliefs on you. For your own good, of course.

That's what I've been wondering! And I've been wondering about it from the opposite viewpoint, too. For the life of me, I cannot understand why someone not believing in God would have any effect on my life whatsoever. The inescapable fact is, it doesn't. Nor do my beliefs have any effect on those who choose not to believe. Why does this subject make people so crazy? +5

I think that a lot of them can. It's not good to generalize. There are a lot of wonderful theists out there who are perfectly happy to let atheists believe what ever they want to. - The group of religious people who can't respect this, however, act like they do due to a lack of understanding, and as a response to a threat. Often, holy texts condemn non-believers, and some believers take this to heart. In other cases, believers have been believers for their whole lives, and just can't understand how someone wouldn't believe, and think that if they push hard enough, you'll convert. - That said, I must restate my first point. It isn't good to generalize. While certain groups and individuals cannot or will not respect the right to be an atheist, lots of believers are totally cool with it. Remember that.

I'm sure that the vast majority of religious people do respect the right of other people to believe in whatever they choose, just as the vast majority of atheists respect the right of religious people to believe as they do. Unfortunately a vocal minority of both sets of people seems to be on a personal quest to ridicule the beliefs of anybody whose beliefs are different to their own.

For much the same reason that many pot heads cannot comprehend why folks don't want to smoke pot.
