  • I have never known any parents who have "gotten upset" with a child who didn't follow their own career paths. I have known some who were disappointed when a child didn't follow a parent's SUGGESTED career path, of course. +5
  • The parents have seen the life and problems in thier life and parents would like thier children follow the right steps so when they are not around the children should not suffer.

  • BEcause to them that is "the way", it's the one path to happiness. They can't even imagine why their kid would want to do something different.
  • If it is a family business, perhaps parents are conscious of the sacrifices that were made to keep it working and they want to see it live on. If it is something like going to the same school, the parents are probably trying to guide the grown child through the "one sure thing" that can provide future security. Any old way, the children are not the parents, and the children live in a different time with different opportunities.
  • Often they're hurt because the kid is breaking with sacred family tradition. At which point they force their kids to do things they never had the guts to do themselves. This is the epitomy of parents living their lives through their kids.
