Why don't some Buddhists eat things like onions, leeks, and garlic?

There is nothing specifically within Buddhism that says that you shouldn't eat onions or garlic.

However, within Indian religions as a whole, there is an idea that eating onions and garlic can heighten desire and sexual energy. So, some monastic traditions will not eat these foods. A modern example is a Hindu tradition, the Hare Krishnas.
