As Roman history itself comes into focus in the last decades of the sixth century BCE, we are told the enigmatic Etruscans were in control of the area around Rome. It is debatable whether kings from Etruria ever actually ruled Rome, as later Roman historians maintained, but the impact of Etruscan culture on Rome is not. The Romans remembered, in particular, the eviction of the last Etruscan king in 510 BCE, their "1776," a seminal year in their history, the moment when they achieved independence and established a fair and representative government they called the Republic ("common-wealth").
