It's just manipulation. People will do what they can to get what they want, including making somebody else feel guilty.

Absolutely! And good listeners -- especially the ones who know enough NOT to offer cheap how-to advice all the time -- are few and far between.

No, to me its not a favor its called having compassion.

Of course you do others a favor by listening. But they don't OWE me a thing, but friendship. Well, maybe at least listen to my advice... ;-)

No I don't think it's doing a favor to listen. The speaker doesn't know what it's like to be a real friend it seems.

Sometimes you can help a person by lending a sympathetic ear, even if you don't have any advice to give -- just let them know that someone cares about them. But that doesn't mean that the person you listen to owes you any favors.

I think that it is my honor to listen to people and I am thrilled if something I say back can help. I will not just let them dump on me though. If they are giving me B.S. I will call them on it.
