What is the difference between college and university? Which one is better?

Universities are usually Ivy league like Columbia,Yale,Princeton, etc... Europeans like to refer to colleges and universities as just universities. I guess it doesn't matter either one or the other as much as the field you ultimately will want to be employed in.Company recruiters usually pick from the Ivy leagues first.
