  • Behind every troubled relationship with a mother in law, there's a passive spouse. I sense that part of your problem is also with your husband, because he won't keep his mum in check. Most men seem unwilling to admit that their mums are anything but perfect saints (probably because mothers always indulge their sons, so your husband probably hasn't seen his mother's controlling behavior). As you've realized, it's up to you to handle this problem because your husband is unwilling to tell her to back off. The best way to escape from a mother in law (or outlaw) is to be absent so she can't manipulate you. There's no reason to spend a lot of time with an unpleasant person; that will only lead to more conflict. Instead, just leave the visiting to your husband and do your own thing, whether that involves completing a project at home, spending time with the kids, or going out on a much-deserved girls' lunch. If your MIL tries to tell you what to do, you can just thank her for the advice or say nothing and then proceed to do your own thing.
