http://www.wikihow.com/Get-Rid-of-Fire-Ants "Another way to get rid of ants is to drop grits on the mound. The ants will eat the grits and the grits will expand in their stomaches, causing them to explode."

I wouldnt say its safe for kids and but its not a chemical that lingers. But we used to take gasoline pour it down the mound then light it on fire...it would get inside the hole and destroy. Dont need fire ants around the house and their gonna die anyways. Its pretty quick and easy. but then again, it shouldnt matter if what the remedy is becuase the kids shouldnt be around a fire ant mound. lol...

Ok; similiar to another answer ... sprinkle about a 1/4 cup of Oatmeal over the mound .. when the queen eats them and then drinks water , they expand and she dies ; thus goes the mound .... +5

You can buy these granuel things (sp?) that you can spread all of your yard including on the mound...Then you water the lawn...and after it dries it's safe for pets and kids.....My dog and son have never been hurt by it and it keeps all the nasty bugs and ants out of the yard for them....Then once you get it under control you can just put it on the perimeter of the yard and it'll keep them out

I pour diesel fuel in the holes and light them on fire.
