If you've ever gotten water in your lungs and lived to cough it all back out, how painful was it to inhale it in the first place?

I think we have all aspirated small bits of food or drink once or twice. It's not a pleasant experience. Usually you just cough non-stop until you get it all out.

Once, I was swimming at a water park and I surfaced and took a deep breath just as someone else was landing in the water- they splashed a huge wave of water directly in my mouth as I was breathing in. It wasn't painful per se, but it was scary. You lose all control of yourself and all you can do is cough as hard as possible. After a while it does start to hurt from just the muscles getting sore.

I had that happen in a swimming pool. Tried to breath before my mouth was all the way out of the water. It was very painful!!! And it hurt for a good little bit too.
