  • I bet there are plenty. It's a shame that all America cares about is looks instead of real talent.
  • Yes, but marketability plays a major part in that. Would you buy a car if it was scratched, dented and painted an awful color even if it was a good reliable car? Some people would, but most people would not. Basically the same concept, record companies don't want to spend time and money on people who aren't completely marketable.
  • Oh yes, most definitely, if you aint the correct dress size or have the 'good looks' (or smouldering looks if you are male) then you aint going nowhere! Did you see the X Factor in the UK where Michelle McManus won? she was about a dress size 20 but had the most beautiful voice, anyway she was 'put' on a diet with one of these 'gurus' (not our Kevin by the way LOL)She did drop a few sizes but you hardly hear of her any more, such a shame.
  • I think appearance has become too important..you have "singers" who have become wildly popular, only to find out that it was lip-sync..but the guys were gorgeous! What a crock! Years ago there were great singers whom we were privileged to hear...I'm not sure what you mean by "ugly"..do you mean deformed in some way? Or do you mean simply normal? It's more evidence of how superficial people are. We focus on form too much and not substance. There are some really awful "singers"..I would name them but why give them more publicity..but they are good-looking..so that absolves them of the need to have talent..as long as they're sexy.
  • Yep, I got rejected because I'm "fat". Not 'yeesh!' fat, but Queen Latifah "fat". Also because I am black & I sing rock, not soul (stereotypes abound, I tell ya). Made me so upset, I stopped trying. Good thing I have brains to rely on lol I'm a junior in college with a double major in English & Computer Info Systems, and a minor in French.
  • Yes. And it's a shame. Who knows what kinds of talents were never brought to attention because they weren't photogenic.
  • Martha Wash was a singer in the 80's- one of her most known songs is "It's Raining Men". She was a big girl, and singers are expected to be fashion models, so her career could only go so far. So a number of bands with pretty girl singers who could not sing used her vocals while the models did the videos. One of those songs was "Everybody Dance Now". She eventually had to sue to get credit for her own work.
  • Or maybe not so much in public, but on TV.
