  • There are ways to partition a disk which has data. But is risky because unless the OS partitions the disk itself there is a chance you will mess up some data. Mostly the tools available do a pretty good job but sometimes they mess up which seems to the problem here. In that case, the tools are unable to clearly determine what part of the harddisk is in use and partitions it wrongly. I am guessing your friend didn't use Vista's inbuilt tools to partition the disk and used a external tool.
