Of course it is! For example I am shy but I can talk about anything on the Internet, even about my personal life and deep feelings since I am anonymous. In the real life we barely talk beyond the Good morning How are you? Fine thanks! See you. And the conversation is over. On the Internet there is no fear of rejection or fear of being ridiculous etc. If someone makes us feel awkward on the Internet what do we do? We block them and simply he or she won't exist anymore. And life goes on. While in real life breaking a relationship can make scars forever.

I think it depends on the type of person you are. For me, yes. It always has been. I've had friends I met on the internet for 13 years... I have very few people I've met in real life I can say the same about.
