Good question. I addressed this as a side note here: http://www.answerbag.com/a_view/7425872 These batteries are not likely to last significantly longer than about five years or so. They will NEVER be operated under ideal charge/recharge cycles, nor in optimal environments. They will likely cost well into four figures to replace as well. Kind of like replacing your transmission, or a major engine overhaul even, when it comes to expense. And YOU, if you're the owner of one of these cars, will not only have to pay for the cost and installation of the battery, but the disposal/reprocessing fees as well. Even if it's only in the price of the new battery (Like, you gotta turn the old battery in or you pay even more.) There is more to it than that...but it's a start to get people to think about this.

You know, I looked at a Honda Civic hybrid. It's a very nice car. I asked the dealer how long the battery would last, he had no answer. I asked how much a replacement costs, again, no answer. I asked what the salvage allowance was....well you know the answer. I bought a VW TDI, Diesel and got 50+ miles per gallon with no hassels other than noting the stations that sold diesel fuel. By the way, the car was $2000 less than the hybrid.

They will be recycled. Like one can do with regular batteries, both wet and dry cells. Batteries Plus will PAY You for batteries. http://www.greencarcongress.com/2009/08/president-obama-announces-48-projects-to-receive-24b-in-grants-for-nextgeneration-of-batteries-and-e.html

You basically un-manufacture them in a factory and recycle their component parts.

Lawn decorations? Sorry, I'm sure they can be recycled but honestly, I'm sure that when they all start failing that a new type of car will come out on the market. Whatever happened to winter bicycles? They existed with I was a kid. Posting Comment...

Where I live, car battery dealers will take your old battery. I believe they are then collected by a recycling company.
