Pretty good, really, at least at the start of his career. Several no-hitters. He is also one of the few greats who was not only a good pitcher, but a great hitter. An unusual combo, really. Most pitchers, even the best, are not exceptional hitters.

From Dugout Central: (the original article includes a good statistical analysis - link included) "Is it amazing that Ruth was a good pitcher and then became the best hitter ever? Yes. Did Ruth have three good seasons as a pitcher? Absolutely. But when one factors in the era in which he was pitching and more modern statistical measures it becomes difficult to call Ruth anything more than a pitcher with a few good seasons. Oh, and the best hitter ever." http://www.dugoutcentral.com/blog/?p=1020

From 1915-17, Ruth won 65 games, the most by any left-handed pitcher in the majors during that time. Babe Ruth still holds the record for the longest complete game victory in World Series history. In 1916, as a member of the Boston Red Sox, Ruth pitched 14 innings to defeat the Brooklyn Robins. He allowed one run in the first inning then shut out the Robins for the next 13 innings for the 2-1 win.

Based on the times in which he played he was good but not exceptional. He may have gotten better if he would have continued. However, he became one of the greatest hitters ever. Probably why he switched from pitching to an outfielder where he could hit every game.
