Because MIL and the wife are very similar in behaviour, thus competition.... No, seriously, I do not agree. My wife isn't like my mother at all (thank god for that!)

Because we hate those who are most similar in us. We see our own faults in them, and try to repress that they exist.

Well,if you follow that pattern,do you think that every man gets along with his mother 100% of the time.Personally,I think that that is bogus,though,since alot of men marry the opposite of their mothers,and alot of women don't marry 'Daddy' types.It's all personal difference to me.*+++++*

from what I've observed, girls have problems with MILs a lot when their husband was spoiled and is still a total mama's boy. that is the worst!

Nope. If that were true, I'd have been a widower when Mom died 13 years ago... Besides, my wife is a hot red-head! Mom wasn't. :):):)

I have a wonderful MIL but I'm not sure that we are that much alike. My HUSBAND, however, is like a combination of my step dad and my real dad. How weird is that?

Because they don't want to marry someone like mom; they want to marry Mama herself. Their Oedipalcomplex hasn't been resolved yet. This would explain why women have problems with their MIL's, because the MIL still tries to exert control over her grown son, and if there's a conflict between mummy and wifey, guess who junior sides with?
