It's equivalent to "Anti-theist", "a" being a prefix that negates the root word "theism". I.e. One who is explicitly not a theist.

Theists are normal everyday people who decide to believe in a superior divine being. Where did the term theist come from?
-
Atheist comes from the Greek: a- "without" + theos "a god". Atheos was to "deny god" and people who practiced it (what we call atheism) were called atheists.

You're absolutly correct, the word Atheist describes an average person who does not believe in god. Atheism is now commonly considered a religion in itself, which is frankly rather insulting and this stigma surrounding the word is the main reason I no longer call myself an atheist. Atheists simply do not believe in god, it is not a religion or cult or any other sort of organization. In fact it is an absence of belief in these supernatural phenomenon. An atheist believes in what can be observed and proven, no faith is required.

Atheism is not simply a matter of rejecting the teachings of the bible, or of rejecting any religion in particular. Atheism means to reject all religion, and the concept of God entirely. An atheist is nothing more or less than a person, who does not believe in God. That's all it really means.
