This phrase is grossly misinterpreted to mean vengeance. If read in context, it is quite the opposite. It was commanded to stop vendettas. Instead of "you do this, I'll do that and more", God said "make the punishment fit the crime and no more". If legal systems over the centuries had applied it, we would not have had people transported for 14 years for stealing a pig.

No, because human beings inevitably value themselves and their kin more than they value others. Hence, 'my pain' is worth more than 'your pain'. So, when a Hatfield shoots a McCoy in the arm, the McCoys inevitably retaliate and shoot two McCoys in both arms and rape a young McCoy woman while they're at it. Thus does the cycle of violence escalate.

No I don't and I agree with singwell that that is a misunderstood verse. I believe in love thy neighbor do good to those who hurt you. It sounds trite to say it but I believe it and I do my best to practice it.
