  • It doesn't "jibe" at all. I know of no other respected church that lays tithing as a requirement for blessings on any member. For instance, in my church tithing is encouraged but that people should individually give how much the Lord has convicted them to give. If its 10% or 15% of your income great, but if its only 5% that the Lord has convicted you to give then thats perfectly fine as well. . Giving of your time is also another way to tithe, although I do not personally believe that it replaces monetary tithing. . Giving to the Lord what is already his has never been a requirement of Christian doctrine. But it is a VERY GOOD idea to listen to God and follow what he convicts you to do and give.
  • Absolutely not! Every other Church I have attended have made it clear that the tithe is a VOLUNTARY expression of our love for God, our appreciation for His work in our lives and the fact that everything that we have is ultimately a gift from Him and under His Lordship. It is, therefore, an expression, or demonstration that Jesus really IS Lord. However, it is ALSO a personal matter that is between yourself and God. The only thing that it "qualifies" you for is proving that you acknowledge His place in your life. Nothing more, nothing less. Speaking personally there have been periods when I have paid the full tithe and periods when I have not. Frankly God hasn't loved me any more or less or blessed me any more of less. Neither has my status within ANY Church risen or fallen based on how much I was Tithing at any given time. The LdS system of mandatory tithing is anomalous and thoroughly UNBiblical.

Elder Dallin H. Oaks was saying that those who don't pay tithing won't get the promised blessings.
