(Hypothetical question, not happening to me.) Say if you're in love with someone but they're gay or lesbian, how would you deal with this? Knowing you could never be with them because of their orientation, would you tell them how you feel?

you can't be in love with somebody you haven't a deep connection/relationship with. it's lust/ a crush, i'd never allow myself to be in that situation.

Well you can love someone without having a sexual relationship with them - not be "In love" maybe but it shouldn't prevent you from still being good close friends. I might tell them how I feel - depending on how I think they might react; if they are likely to be grossed out that a heterosexual finds them appealing it is probably best left unsaid. But if they are an affectionate person regardless of gender it may just make your friendship all the more rewarding; so long as you can handle the lack of physical attraction on their part.

Love is a choice, lust is not. If you're in lust with someone with a different sexual orientation, I can see no useful purpose in telling them. If you think you're "in love" with someone with a different sexual orientation, decide that you're not, and move on with your life.

I had this experience before, but I never said a word. It's disrespectful to force one's attentions on someone else when you know that they will never return them. Just express your admiration for that person as a friend and then turn your attentions towards someone who can respond to you.
