Sounds like a ganglion cyst. Does it move around under the skin when finger pressure is applied? They're fairly common and will go away eventually. They're usually not painful. I don't know how they're treated these days, but when I went to the doc with one many years ago (we're talking 20-30 years ago) he told me that it would likely resolve on its own but that if it didn't he would hit it with a phone book! I thought he was kidding, but the odd thing is that I fell some time later and came down on the area where it was (right by the juncture of my wrist and the pad of flesh on the palm below the thumb. It didn't hurt, and oddly it began to disappear from that day forward until it was gone. It's never come back. I guess the doc wasn't kidding. ;)
