almost 95% of rap/hip hop is just plain shit and most of these so called artists are one hit wonders and can't put more than 2 or maybe 3 CD's out before they run out of material, M.J. has years and years of hits before he did thriller so he had plenty of time to perfect his music and craft

You could argue a variety of reasons but here's my take. Jackson peddled pop music. Very well crafted and executed pop music but pop nevertheless. A genre like hip hop (at least good ip hop) akin to jazz or any other niche market simply doesn't appear to appeal to the majority. Far more are going to simply go with something a little less taxing. Same with many musical genres. Many people would go for Mozart over serialist composers as it is far more accessible. Also we should remember Jackson was very talented and worked with very talented people. Much like the Beatles sometimes something just clicks, Also you are maybe comparing apples and oranges. The music scene is incredibly different now to when Jackson ruled supreme and even more so than the era of the Beatles. I doubt any band or artist will dominate in the manner that Jackson et al did.
