Are there any companies that produce cruelty free down blankets that don't cost a fortune? If not, can't I make one over years of keeping ducks and collecting their fallen feathers or something?

You don't need down at all. Lightweight, washable, synthetic insulating materials have been available for years that do as well, and they have the advantage of being non-allergenic. Any of the major outdoor stores have such items. REI: http://www.rei.com/ LLBean: http://www.llbean.com/ Lands' End: http://www.landsend.com/ Eddie Bauer: http://www.eddiebauer.com/ ...and others. They all have summer sales right now. These stores also carry goose down products, such as comforters, if you insist on real down. Don't worry about cruelty. They pamper the geese, and when they need to pluck another feather they distract him: "Look! Over there! Isn't that a big pile of ripe, juicy corn?" When the goose turns to look, <pluck> and he doesn't even notice. I have a beautiful green comforter that I got from REI 30 years ago. It keeps me VERY warm.

Nothing beats natural fibers such as feathers. Man has tried many times to imitate, but nothing comes close. The swiss down blanket makers, actually gather the feathers during molt.
