Is there a difference between believing something and believing /in/ something?

I think people are more like to believe something without evidence and without much conviction. But when they believe in something, they're puting extreme faith and thought into that belief.

To believe in something implies that you believe he/she/it exists, whereas to believe something means that you believe what he/she/it says. For example, Leviticus 20:13 says: "If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable..." If I believed that, but was not a Christian, then I would believe God, but I would not believe IN god. (as I don't think he exists, but what the bible says is right). I just want to make it clear, that that is not my opinion at all, I have no problem with homosexuality. I was only using it as an example.
