If you are using Windows, is there a small speaker icon down beside the clock in the bottom right corner? Does it have a small red circle with a line through it? If it does then it is muted and needs to be unmutted. Go into the Control Panel, double click on Sound and when the window appears make sure the Playback tab is highlighted and Speakers is selected with the green tick mark beside it. Go into Device Manager and when the window opens look for Sound, Video and Game Controllers, click on the + sign and look for something like Realtek High Definition Audio. If it is not there then you do not have an audio card in your computer or you need to download a driver.

Whilst there isn't a "standard chip", you may still have the required hardware. Check the back of your case - you may see sound jacks like this: http://www.fvdes.com/knowledgeroot/uploads/image/sound_card.jpg If not, then you really don't have any sound hardware!

I have had to manually load/install the AC97 codec so many times on so many computers that whenever I hear a problem like this, it is my first thought.
