The Idea of one man as head of the church -as a Pope, is not Bible based. If Peter were the head of the early church or congregation, then we should find the apostles and others ascribing to Peter a place of preeminence such as the pope of Rome has today. But we find no such honor accorded to Peter by either the apostles or the other disciples. Peter never makes mention of himself as pope. Neither Paul nor any others of the Bible writers refer to any primacy of Peter. When the apostles and other older men gathered in Jerusalem to discuss the question of circumcision, we find that it was not Peter but the disciple James who summed up the matter. (see Acts 15:12-21) Surely had Peter been the chief and in Christ’s place he would have done so. But he did not. Clearly, Peter was not the head of the Christian congregation. It is not built on him as its foundation cornerstone. It is built on Jesus Christ himself, the sinless Son of God.—Hebrews. 7:26.

John 21:15-17 states: When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you." He said to him, "Feed my lambs." He then said to him a second time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you." He said to him, "Tend my sheep." He said to him the third time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" Peter was distressed that he had said to him a third time, "Do you love me?" and he said to him, "Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you." (Jesus) said to him, "Feed my sheep. Matthew 16:17-19 states: Jesus said to him in reply, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven." The Catholic Church believes the Lord made Simon alone, whom he named Peter, the "rock" of his Church. He gave him the keys of his Church and instituted him shepherd of the whole flock. The Pope is the senior pastor of 1.1 billion Catholic Christians, the direct successor of Simon Peter. The Pope’s main roles include teaching, sanctifying, and governing. For more information, see the Catechism of the Catholic Church, section 880-882: http://www.usccb.org/catechism/text/pt1sect2chpt3art9p4.shtml#880 With love in Christ.

nowhere in any bible, catholic, protestant or otherwise is the pope prohibited. Pope is the translation of a another word meaning, church father, or church overseer. The misconception came from when martin luther translated the bible. Martin Luther was a trained priest, so he had personal knowledge of the different languages that make up the bible itself. The catholics church was made up of the original christian church. Basically, after centuries of persecution against the Christian, Emperor Constantine under the upbringing and influence of his mother who was a devout Christian formally legalized Christianity. He then gave most of what was left of the vast Roman empire to the new legalized church. If was afterwards that the church was started to be called the Roman Catholic Church. "Catholic" being another name for universal. So basically, when Christiantiy became legalized and it's people were no longer outcasts, the church came under the personal protection of Rome. The word "Pope" came from the greek word meaning, church after, or overseer. That's where the confusion comes in. When the catholic church teaches that St peter was the first pope, they are right. In translation they are basically saying that St peter was the church's first church father/overseer. As to Jesus saying that the church would be built on St peter. It was the literal truth. Only Jesus would know of the worship, and praise that would develop and evolve at the sight of St peter's crucifixion. Later on, adherents would call for a formal church to be built of this site, which is now called St Peter's basilica.

No, Jesus gave St. Peter the keys to the kingdome. The keys to the kingdow is the authority to rule after Jesus leaves. So St.Peter was the first pope put there by J.C. himself. It's all in the Bible.
