I know that Gene Roddenberry created Star Trek but did he also create the look of the ships and what not or was that done by conceptual artist right before it aired on tv?

It is my understanding that the starship configuration was conceptualized by Paramount studio artists with much input from the scientific community, such as students at M.I.T. and Stanford. +5

The Enterprise was designed by a group of artists under the direction of Matt Jeffries, who researched space travel and science fiction to come up with the final design, under the supervision of Gene Roddenberry. "By the third time around he had two sheets of eight or ten drawings plus half a dozen good-sized renderings. One of them was the beginning of the design finally chosen ... In about thirty-five or forty minutes I had a model. We hung it on a piece of thread and called everyone in.
