    The Chief

Well, I've answered similar questions here before, and I'm sure links are posted in my profile for them.

First of all, a gun in my house would not be my primary means of defense. I have children in the house and as such I do NOT leave any of my firearms loaded. Not even in one of those gun safes which have the quick access codes to (which I have yet to buy anyway).

But I DO have several firearms from which to choose from. Should the opportunity allow me to gain access to them AFTER moving my family to safety and getting them to call 911, my first choice would be my 12 Ga pump shotgun, followed by my .45 Colt.

    My reasons are this:

    1. A reasonable show of deadly force includes the psychological impact of the weapon presented. To that end, there is NOTHING so readily identifiable as the sound of a 12 gauge pump shotgun slide chambering a round.

The same theory follows for the sound of my Colt .45 slide chambering a round.

Both are unique and readily recognizable signs that SOMETHING has gone horribly wrong for the person(s) who breaks into my house.

    2. My choice of firearms is also based upon two ballistic characteristics which are desirable:

-Sufficient firepower to take the invader down.

-Sufficient margin of safety with respect to any rounds escaping my house with sufficient energy to cause serious injury to any neighbors or passers-by.

The goal is to stop the invader...NOT kill or injure innocent people with my weapon.

I keep a simi auto 12 gage Beretta with number 1 buck shot. with the plug takeing out so that I have 5 shells instead of three.
    I plan on geting a S&W modle 500 50 cal. long barrel.
many people would run at the sight of it ,most will run at the sound of it being shot even if I am inside and thay are outside at the street, and knowone will stand after being shot with one. the modle 500 is only good at home are in your vehicle for protection It would be very hard to concel on person.

A compact high capacity semi-automatic pistol using 40S&W ammo.

For those who question the safety of a hand gun in the home may I suggest that you invest in gun training for the whole family. Cars are also very dangerous when used by the untrained.

A 0.30 carbine or my ppk against people.....but I keep a 7.62x54 M-44 carbine in the event of a bear break-in. (Somewhat ironic, eh? A Russian rifle is my primary defense against a bear invasion?)

A gun for home protection? ha! guns are made for killing and that is what they do... want home protection get a baseball bat and a good gaurd dog... maybe a taser or some pepper spray... to rewrite the question "what gun would be your choice to cause another useless death?". And to answer your question a shotgun... from range it has a lower chance of killing and doesnt go through walls as easily killing someone sitting on their bet imho

Sawed off pump. Maneuvers well in tight places, excellent stopping power and has a large 'hit' zone. Perfect for when you are suddenly awakened and your aim isn't quite up to snuff yet yo...

Most experts reccomend a 12 gauge shotgun. At the distances within a home, the spread would be just enough to give you a good chance of nailing an attacker without spreading wildly all over the place. The sound of the gun being pumped has been recorded as being a great psychological deterrent (for obvious reasons) and if you do need to fire, the shoulder stock will provide support because no matter how brave you think you are, your hands will be much too shaky to fire a handgun accurately unless you've had a great deal of training and you are very familiar with how it works. Personally, I use a Mosin Nagant as my home defense gun, but thats just because I haven't bought a shotgun yet, and it makes a great club, spear, polearm, if I happen to miss.
