Well, I've answered similar questions here before, and I'm sure links are posted in my profile for them.

First of all, a gun in my house would not be my primary means of defense. I have children in the house and as such I do NOT leave any of my firearms loaded. Not even in one of those gun safes which have the quick access codes to (which I have yet to buy anyway).

But I DO have several firearms from which to choose from. Should the opportunity allow me to gain access to them AFTER moving my family to safety and getting them to call 911, my first choice would be my 12 Ga pump shotgun, followed by my .45 Colt.

My reasons are this:

1. A reasonable show of deadly force includes the psychological impact of the weapon presented. To that end, there is NOTHING so readily identifiable as the sound of a 12 gauge pump shotgun slide chambering a round.

The same theory follows for the sound of my Colt .45 slide chambering a round.

Both are unique and readily recognizable signs that SOMETHING has gone horribly wrong for the person(s) who breaks into my house.

2. My choice of firearms is also based upon two ballistic characteristics which are desirable:

-Sufficient firepower to take the invader down.

-Sufficient margin of safety with respect to any rounds escaping my house with sufficient energy to cause serious injury to any neighbors or passers-by.

The goal is to stop the invader...NOT kill or injure innocent people with my weapon.

Glock is a good choice, very nice gun, easy to shoot, almost as good as a wheel gun (revolver). But the caliber is light. A 9mm will really piss someone off, but it is weak for killing. A Glock .40 or .45 is a better choice.

they work most of the time. Sometimes it just makes a drunk/drugged up person more violent.

I use my .44 cal. steel frame Remington with a .45 cal. conversion cylinder. This is the same gun that I use as my avatar.

Very much so. :-) And deadly accurate. I can shoot it with either .44 cal. cap and ball or .45 Long Colt with the conversion cylinder as shown in the picture. :-D

Good gun. To bad I did not see this page a week ago. I had twenty three 50 round boxes of 45 long colts, I did not need any more. I let them go with the reloading kit I sold. They got themselfs a good deal. I would of gave them a few boxes of reloads also, but they where over a year old. So I just unloaded them & keep the lead.......Oh'We'll I still say ya got a good gun there, don't let it go.......Plus 6.......M.C.S. The "Missouri Crack Shot"...Bye Bye!!!
Avatar 1858 Remington 1-20-13 Oct, 25 2009 at 11:11 AM
Thank you. I actually have four Remingtons but this is the only steel frame, the others are brass. I only use the conversion cylinder with the steel frame. :-)
This picture I have posted here has the .44 cap and ball cylinder in the gun. :-D

If you "forget" about the trap door, yes it would...
.
TRUE STORY:
This babe was living alone, she was extremely pretty, and plenty of men knew who she was, and where she lived. One night, one of them decided to enter her place, sneak into her bedroom and rape her.
.
As soon as he walked into her bedroom in the total darkness, he heard a loud SNAP! noise, then started screaming at the top of his lungs. The pretty girl woke up, turned on her light, saw the intruder and telephoned the police.
.
When the dude walked into her bedroom, he stepped on a few of THESE:
.

.
Yep, BEAR TRAPS! He got caught in one, then fell down and landed on two more. The cops found him still screaming a confession, as they undid him and drove him first to the hospital, and then to jail.
.
NEVER go after a babe who was reared in a hunting family!
Avatar Davidine Jul, 18 2009 at 02:01 PM
haha, is that true?
Avatar Mensan Jul, 18 2009 at 02:40 PM
I was told that it is a true story, from a friend who is not known for lying.

A super soaker would not protect you. It would just piss off the intruder!

*shrug* I wouldn't need to use it, or want to
