  • I'll use Christian fundamentalists in an example since I'm most familiar with it. In these types of communities, their entire life is based around their religion. Everyone they know is religious and usually follows their exact way of thinking. In such a culture, where every little thing you do hinges on your belief, it would be surprisingly for someone to learn that there are people who live without any influence from a higher power at all. The belief in a higher power provides the foundation for their opinions, lifestyles, etc. It would be tantamount to the modern world becoming aware of a largely populated country that had no government or law and yet functioned just as well. The thought is inconceivable to us.
