Buy a karaoke machine, you can buy a very good model for less than $100 brand new, and if you shop the thrift stores or garage sales you could find a working machine for next to nothing. If you find out you like this method then you have a great tool to develop your singing voice and you have spent less than you would have for formal lessons. If the karoke machine does not work for you, then sell it off.

Not really. it's like any other sports activity. you need to train with someone who knows how to do it. there's no substitute to a real teacher who will tell you the basics of breathing correctly, supporting your voice, warming up correctly, discover your voice type and find the right material for you to sing.

Join a choir. Choral singing being what it is, choral conductors expect to do more educational work than perhaps any other type performing musician. A community or church choir or the chorus of a community musical theater company will also usually be a fairly laid-back, supportive environment where you can learn a little, make some music and have some fun. and at some point, you might be able to take advantage of the opportunity to grab a solo or a lead. What more could you ask? Also, pick up a wind instrument. Even a recorder. You can learn to play a soprano recorder in literally a few hours, and it will improve your breath control, your sense of pitch and your musicality. This will translate into your voice, if you let it. -EdM.

Stop by your local Sam Ash Music store and go to the sheet music section. Inquire of the person behind the counter where you can find the vocal education books. Make sure to get one that comes with a companion CD. I'd flip through a few until you find one or two that make sense to you. Be ready to take your time shopping- you want something that'll suit you. And always, always practice! ^_^ Good luck!
