Why do so many people think that the world is going to end on December 21, 2012?

They must have inside information from above. Now that I know, I need to spend all my money having a good time until Dec. 20, 2012. I am resigning my job tomorrow. I need the time to catch up since I have been living a frugal life in case I live to be 75 years old.

first off the world is not going to end but change very drastically. All the occult means point to this date. the sun will line up directly with the earth causing the earth to move in a wobble , must read up on this in the mayians calendar and check out how on that day will be moving from one point pisces to aquarius .

I've said it before, and I'll say again: Humans are probably the only creatures on this planet who like to come up with the worst possible imaginable scenario. People have been trying unsuccessfully for CENTURIES, to pinpoint the end of the world. Here's a fact: People who start growing more elderly are being forced to face their own mortality. So to comfort themselves as they near death, they take to religion and they brainwash themselves into believing that on 12/21/12, the world is going to end and God is going to come and Rapture the believers up to Heaven while nonbelievers are sent to Hell. It's utter BULL CRAP. Trust me when I say that there's no way that the world will end. There is absolutely no reason to be worried, so just ignore the Rapture believers and get on with your life doing whatever it is you do.

People like feelings of danger. The truth is, people have no evidence that the world will end on dec 12 2012, but they like to play into unknowns. Its like why people go to see horror films and why everything we see on the news has to do with death.

My guess is that on a big red button somewhere, someone put a sign that says "Do not press this a big red button on the December 21st, 2012". No doubt some idiot will press it and every computer running anything Microsoft will explode. Geeks around the world will be thrown in to termoil and would rather blow up the planet than use an Apple Mac. Like I said, just a guess.....

The Mayans predicted that the 5th and final cycle of life on earth would end on this date. Their calendar has been touted as the most accurate of it's time.

its proven by scientist that on that date all the planets will align with each other. but no one knows 100% what will actually happen when they do align. 2 popular scientific theories is that the earths polarity will be reversed, or that the rotation of earth will increase, thus speeding up the rate at which seasons (summer winter ect) happen.
