I like the idea of lerning to read by the time you're a year old, actually. It gives them plenty of time to play wehn they are able to run around. We used to be in a highly competitive area and I complained alot about how much homework my daughter had. She never had time to play after school! But since we've moved, we're in a district that is more child-oriented than Parent-oriented. The kids are much happier here and are still on equal ground.

Huh? The majority of your ability to learn is at a young age. They should be learning more. It is fairly easy to turn play into learning sessions. No child left behind has put us years behind.

yes!... kids today are not allowed to be kids anymore, they are being pushed to be bloody einsteins before they are 3 years old

your best learning years are the young ages. A child's mind absorbs facts and experiences MUCH more readily than an adults. Within reason, of course. You have to tailor the learning to the physical and mental capabilities of the child in question. You cannot, for example, teach an infant to ride a bicycle because they are not physically or mentally able to learn this skill at that point in their development. And play is, in fact, how children learn. As for "learning too early in life" in general: that's a crock in general. As a species, and historically, humans used to learn to be on their own at a much earlier age than we do now, at least in America.

children should never be 'pushed' to learn, but they are capable of a remarkable amount of learning at early ages. i think childhood should be a balance of learning and play, structure and freetime, work and fun. actually all of us would benefit from the above formula, no matter our ages!!

Yes I do.
