Most of Mormon leaders have been Free Masons.Since some of their practices are secret, much like the Mormons, this perpetuates the notion of cult activity.

Where does one begin and one end with this question? The links between Joseph Smith, Masonry and the Occult are well documented. It is a deep, deep, deep topic that literally thousands of pages and maybe even more hours of dialog have covered. So what I'm going to do is provide links that you and others can use to do their own research: AUDIO: Greg Kearney 'Masonry and Mormonism' http://www.concernedchristians.com/index.php?option=com_fireboard&Itemid=42&func=view&id=69507&catid=522 Dan Vogel, "Mormonism's 'Anti-Masonic Bible' http://www.concernedchristians.com/index.php?option=com_fireboard&Itemid=42&func=view&id=74871&catid=10 D. It's no secret that Joseph Smith Jr (and most LdS men) were Free Masons during the Nauvoo Era. It is also accepted that Joseph adopted aspects of many sources. The LdS Endowment ceremony has been called Celestial Masonry. The Occult is too broad a term to adequately address in such a short space. "Occult" means "hidden"; it is the opposite of "apocalypse" ("unveiling"). "Gnostic" means "knowing". Mormonism believes it holds truths hidden from or lost by the rest of Christianity. Many of these hidden truths are revealed in the various temple ceremonies. In modern times, the Occult seems to concern itself with witchcraft / folk magick and the dead. LdS do /not/ (or at least not supposed to) summon the dead, use Ouija, etc. LdS believe that the Spirit World (where the dead await the resurrection) occupies the same sphere as our world (just a different dimension). We believe that the spirits of the dead can visit the living. LdS do /not/ practice witchcraft. Joseph Smith Jr used seer stones, which may fall under the classification of folk magick.

Without the occult, christianity and judaism would have never come about. Joseph Smith was just crazy and his religion wouldn't have become if it wasn't for the occult. The high up Free Masons know the truth, while most of the Masons are just front men who belong to a club.

I believe that Mister_IT has answered the question. Although I will say this - the links between the Free Masons and the occult today is based on myth, history and misunderstanding. In fact, discussing religious belief is not allowed in the Free Masons. It is required that you believe in something greater than yourself - whatever that is, and whatever your religion. However it is not to be discussed with one another.
