Just playing the devils advocate here; maybe they're so rare because it is so publicized and everyone is prepared for the worst.

"Flu spreads around the world in seasonal epidemics, resulting in the deaths of hundreds of thousands annually — millions in pandemic years." from the wikipedia article on influenza... the reason people are panicing is because there is a chance (even though it is a part of the influenza genetics) that it will kill you, either that or it will make you violently ill... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Influenza If you've had the flu (and I have if you are wondering) you know what it is like... that's not to say that you have had the flu or this flu is like any other (has the same symptoms), and I just learned about the swine flu epidemic today, and though I'm not worried, especially since I cook my pork all the way through, The flu is not fun. My experience with influenza (the normal strain) is three days straight sleeping 20 hours on the couch, waking up long enough to only go to the bathroom when I needed it, get a drink, and take my medicine (and then when my mom told me to get up and eat something). Then after three days going to the doctors and while waiting (sitting) feeling sick to my stomache, and then standing up to go to the bathroom (to throw up though I was able to keep it down) feeling like a major head rush (not being able to see) making it to the door of the room we were in and leaning there until it passed... then after that going through it again not a day later from a relapse.... (basically sleeping 7 days straight)... it was not fun and I wouldn't have wished the sickness on my worst enemy... that's my experience and that is why people are panicing, because if they didn't it may raise to global pandemic state...
