The Western religions are basically the same: Islam, Christianity, and Judaism. Eastern religions are a bit more varied, but I see your point. People who are religious have a vested interest in believing that they have the "right" religion. They are giving up some freedoms in order to get a big payoff in the afterlife; if they accept the possibility that they are wrong then all of their lost freedoms are for naught. It's just logical, human nature even, to want to believe you made the right choice (or in the case of most religious people: you were born lucky).

everyone thinks they're right because it's human nature. you don't believe in something expecting to be wrong - and when it comes to religion, the stakes are higher than usual. i don't think the trend towards eternal damnation is comical. it has created quite a lot of conflict and unpleasantness in the world. i suspect that the truth of God is much different from what any person or religion can anticipate.
