  • All things equal [especially the number of men on both sides], no. Advances in technology.
  • I think that the phalanx formation could win against many medieval army because the phalanx was very organized, while medieval armies were not. Plus ancient armies were much larger than medieval ones.
  • I reckon the Ancient armies if allied could beat a medieval ones. But it all depends on the location. If the Medieval Army was on top of a hill and the anicient army was at the bottom, a cavalry charge would destroy the Phalanx quickly. But if on flat land then Ancient army would win, due to the vastly superior Tactics and formations of the Troops. i.e. the Phalanx of the Romans, Sheild wall of the Spartans, Massive numbers of the Chinese and Persians and the fighting spirit of the Jews and Japanese.
  • Since medieval armies rely much more on heavy cavalry than infantry, I would say that any medieval army would generally be able to defeat any ancient army. I mean, there was a reason that heavy cavalry started to become popular in Europe...
  • Given comparable numbers and competant command on both sides ... Never in a million years. No more than a Medieval Army could defeat even a 17th Century Army.
  • The medieval would surely lose because they rtelied on numbers while the most powerful ancient armies ( Macedonians, Spartans e.t.c) relied on their soldiers'skill.
  • Of course. Medieval armies had more advanced weaponry.
  • Possibly under certain circumstances. In the Middle Ages Robert thr Bruce used a formation of pikes known as a "Schiltron" to successfully fight armoured knights. This always reminds me of Alexander the Great and the Greek Phalanx. Also, some ancient military technology was better than medieval technology. The Romans used segmented armour which was supposed to be lighter and stronger than mail. Also, Roman shields used multiple plys of wood in different directions whereas Viking shields were made of only one ply. This meant that a blow along the grain would split the shield of a Viking, but not a Roman. Furthermore, Roman helmets covered the head much better than many medieval helmets. Mind you the Romans had problems with armoured Knights in the Ancient Persian army 2000 years ago. Also, the Sarmatians wore armour made of mail and small plates like the Normans later did and the Romans only defeated them with great difficulty.
