Probably due to some sentences in some religious texts that require believers to be steadfast in their faith (and not fall prey to other religions). and thus conflict begins.

Cause we Christians want to convert people to Christ to save them. And if they won't do it peacefully, we'll invade their country under the guise of freedom and democracy and convert their asses. We'll also introduce baseball to their country so it won't look like a currency, I mean, religious war.

In the past, most societies developed in isolation from eachother, so every group had their own idea of a religion, and this is the root of the problem. Religions become a way of life for those practicing them, and unfortnately, everyone believes that their own religion is the only right one. Religious wars are fought over who's religion is better. Ironic, yeah? Of course, i have nothing to back this up because it's just an answer off the top of my head, but it makes sense to me.

I think that most answerers have missed the obvious. Humans USE religion to justify their aims. So, a king who wants to conquer his neighbours USES religious terms ("God wants this" "They are heathens" etc) to further their own political angles.

Many wars are recorded as being about religion but is unlikely that religion was the only factor in the decision to go to war. Grabbing land, coastlines, looting, payback for previous wars are all much better reasons to fight. Motivating individuals to go to war requires a little more and religion often fills the bill.

Because since the Garden of Eden, Man has been deciding for himself what is good or bad, rather than letting the only true God, tell him what is good or bad... When we take matters into our own hands... we destroy ourselves. (Jeremiah 10:23)- The way we should do things is not in us...

do you have any statistics whatsoever to conclude that most wars are based on religion? While many wars and much blood has been shed in the name of religion, I doubt "most" are because of religion. Often, when is "the reason ", it is often the case of leaders using the faith of the masses to rally people into fighting wars on their behalf they would probably not have much enthusiasm for otherwise. Even Saddam Hussein, a very secular ruler, tried to play the jihad card at the bitter end. Most wars are fought over greed/ real estate.

Religion was just an excuse. Had religion not been a convenient justification for war, men would have found something else.
-
It's not so much the teachings of the religion that spur people to fight, but rather rabid fanaticism. If people believe in something, anything strongly enough, they can grow to hate any others who believe differently.
-
I'd say it is the people in power using religion as a tool to wage war and expand their empire/noteriety.

The only times they teach love and peace, is when they're not in the majority.
